John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director Ron Vitiello will be stepping down from his position on Friday, marking the latest move in the Trump administration’s immigration staff shakeup.

Vitiello, who has served as acting ICE director since June 2018, will be officially vacating his post by the end of the week, the agency has confirmed. It is not yet clear who will replace him, but acting deputy director Matthew Albence is next in line. Vitiello’s resignation follows President Donald Trump’s decision earlier in April to pull his nomination to lead the agency in an official capacity.

“[Vitiello is] a good man,” the president told reporters the day after rescinding Vitiello’s nomination. “But we’re going in a tougher direction. We want to go in a tougher direction.”

Vitiello is one of several high-profile leaders in the Department of Homeland Security who have been pushed out by the administration. The shakeups come as Trump, frustrated over rising illegal immigration at the U.S. southern border, is looking to toughen up enforcement.

Trump accepted Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s resignation just several days after pulling Vitiello’s nomination. Acting deputy secretary for Homeland Security Claire Grady also submitted her resignation. There is rampant speculation that the president will also push out director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Lee Francis Cissna by the end of the week.

Apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border, in the meantime, have reached their highest numbers in over a decade.

Recently published data from Customs and Border Protection revealed agents had apprehended or turned back 103,492 migrants who attempted to reach the U.S. southern border in March — marking the highest apprehensions month in 12 years. Detainment centers, packed with Central American families, have been forced to release an average of 1,000 illegal migrants a day.

Maybe I should apply.

Port Richey recently had an article about how they were having trouble finding a replacement Mayor (ours was arrested in a shoot-out with his own police force on drug charges and the deputy mayor was arrested in the resulting corruption investigation).  It seems the council was having trouble finding candidates whe were not on any prescribed narcotics, had never been arrested, and lived within the city limits.  I was willing to apply, but a check with the Property Appraiser turned up that I live in "Port Richey", but not within the city limits.  So I can't be mayor either.

Perhaps I should skip local Politics and jump right into Director of ICE?

I'm sure a Democrat could change things in Port Richey. Obviously good men are being discriminated against or incarcerated etc because of the current laws. If drugs were legalized you wouldn't be having these problems. Lots of good men could then be considered for candidacy.

I never really thought that I had the right skills to be a good mayor, but when the last one ended in a shootout, I decided that they had set the bar low enough that even I could reach it.

I was pretty sure I could serve out a term without needing to resort to gunplay ...

Most people are rooting for some local character to be mayor whose claim to fame is his ability to twirl a sign along the highway to attract customers.  Unfortunately, I don't think that he lives within the city limits either.

The whole thing is equal parts sad and hilarious.  A lot like our southern border debate.
