John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

A conflict with a pastor

Recommended Posts

I said to the pastor of the church I visit weekly that he probably has double standards on certain thing.

He requested me to repent of this, that I have no right to speak with him like this.

I insist that I am not sure whether he indeed has double standards, and so accordingly of the truth cannot say that what I said was wrong.

Should I trying to reconcile with him to say "I regret that I said this."?

Kinda, truth and peace debate.

We are going to need a bit more to go on than this.  Why would you consider him showing a double-standard?  What was the issue?  Why did you feel you needed to confront him about it directly, rather than speaking to an elder about it?

My friend in Brazil lost the job and is in need now, to cover the food and a home.

I found a Christian organization which may send him some money.

The organization requires to give them a contact info of a pastor knowing the situation (to avoid cheaters).

I asked the pastor to confirm for them. But when the pastor heard the name of the head of that Christian organization, he said that will not have any deals with them, calling their head "antisemite" (while my pastor is strongly messianic).

Then I told the pastor that I suspect that he has double standards: if an organization ruled by an atheist or by a Hindu man phoned him to confirm that I am not a cheater, he would probably agree to say them this. (Note that I said only "probably".)

Then the pastor said that I have no right to speak with him so and required me to repent.

Well, you were a bit out of line in that response, if not completely out of left field.  Reason being it is unnecessary to equate looking for help from a Christian organization with requesting it from some secular organization.  There would be no reason for anyone from the secular organization to even care about approaching a pastor of a church as a character reference for the person requesting help.

When it comes to a Christian organization it is reasonable for the leadership to be careful about what other organizations they associate with.  If the pastor feels the leader of the organization your friend is approaching is antisemite, and therefore, will not have any dealings with that is their choice.  That does not mean he has a double standard.
