John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Luke 6:28 - what does it mean?

Recommended Posts

Bless those who curse you.  What does this mean exactly?

Having given it some thought, I believe it means that I should not hope that you go to hell when you die, even if you annoy me.  Does anyone have a different interpretation?

Isn't this in the same ballpark as being thankful for hardships and misery?

...but then the question remains similar, perhaps...

I think bad things in life draws people closer to God and / or makes us seek Him.

As opposed to everything being honky dory, and not needing God.

...but i prefer honky dory none the less...
