John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Democratic Congresswomen Want To Lower Federal Voting Age To 16

By Peter Hasson - Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley on Tuesday evening introduced legislation to lower the federal voting age from 18 to 16. Pressley cited teen activists pushing for gun control as a reason for giving 16-year-olds the right to vote, which the congresswoman compared to having a driver’s license. “Young people are at the forefront of some of our most existential crises,” Pressley added. “The time has come. Our young people deserve to have the opportunity to exer

    • How Stories Unsettle Our Secular Age

When Christians interpret, critique, and discuss stories with our neighbors, we can model a contemplative approach that promotes self-reflection and honesty, inviting empathy rather than promoting the detached rationalism of the buffered self. We can lean into the cross pressures produced by these stories. We can offer interpretations that affirm and account for our longings for forms of beauty, goodness, order, and love that find their being beyond the immanent frame of our secular age. By “st

    • Church Planting in a Politically Divided Age

We live in a divided age. Partisan politics has gripped many nations—including the United States—and, sadly, many of our churches. Modern-day American Christians are becoming increasingly split along party lines. And in a split-party system, it can be difficult to make biblically informed decisions about how to vote. Even more challenging is the call to love those who vote differently than we do. How does the church remain united even when—especially when—we disagree over decisions regarding t

    • The "Age of Accountability"

What is the Scriptural basis for an "age of accountability" regarding a child's salvation?   I think the best way to answer that is to say this: There is no "age of accountability" identified in Scripture, as such. There is nothing in the Bible that says, "Here is the age and from here on you are responsible!" I think the reason for that is because children mature at different paces. That would be true from culture to culture, and from age to age in history.   So the Lord in His wisdom di

    • Did Paul Ryan Propose Raising The Retirement Age To 70?

By Brad Sylvester - The liberal Facebook page Really American, which has nearly 1 million followers, posted a meme claiming that House Speaker Paul Ryan had proposed a plan to increase the retirement age to 70.   “Hypocrisy of the GOP,” reads the Dec. 9 meme. “Paul Ryan proposed raising the retirement age to 70 but retired at 48 with a full government pension.” Verdict: True Ryan released a proposal in 2010 that would have gradually increased th
