John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

God's Simple Plan of Salvation

Jesus had given His followers a great commission to be carried out after His departure to heaven – Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16. The first century Christians preached and taught the exact message Jesus told them to teach and preach. Through their zeal for the assignment given to them by Jesus, many souls were saved – Acts 2:41,47. They did not compromise the truth for material gain – Acts 4:19-20. They preached unadulterated gospel to the then nations in their time.

The example that we find within the New Testament of what it means to be the church of Christ is available for us today. We ought to emulate that example if we want to be the church of Christ.

God expects faithful men to use whatever abilities and opportunities they have for His glory and for the good of others. Faithful men, who are able to preach and teach the pure and undiluted gospel are privileged to get God’s message into the hearts of perishing souls in the world. That will bring more help, hope, and happiness than anything anyone can do.

But what exactly is happening today? Why are we polluting the pure gospel of Jesus Christ? Why are we drifting away from the truth? Why are we not ready to go into all the world to preach and teach only the pure gospel of Christ Jesus? Why are we changing the exact gospel to something else forgetting that we are “servants of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God”? – 1 Cor. 4:1; 1 Pet. 4:11

Moses disobeyed a direct command from God – Numbers 20:8-12. God commanded Moses to speak to the rock. But Moses struck the rock with his staff. We are also commanded to go into the world to preach and teach the saving gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost souls. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved – Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:38, 41. Must we change this pure message of Jesus Christ to our own opinions and traditions? In verse 12 of numbers chapter 20, God displeased with Moses’ actions toward His direct command. So God did not allow Moses and his brother to enter into the promised land.

We must learn serious lessons from Moses’ action – Rom. 15:4. We must not pervert the gospel of Jesus Christ to suit our own doctrines and traditions. Remember, God did not allow Moses to enter into the land. Likewise, He will never allow those who disobey, teach and preach false gospel to spend eternity with Him.

May the Lord give us strength and courage to teach and preach nothing but the truth – John 8:32; 17:17; 1Tim. 1:3-4…… Amen!
