John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

The Christian and physical sickness

Recommended Posts

It troubles me when I think of or hear about people who throw away their medicine or refuse to see a doctor because they believe that Christians are not supposed to get physically sick. It is even more troubling when they do this to their children and sadly sometimes the child ends up dead.

Let me just say that God can heal anybody at anytime if He so chooses.

Paul had some form of infirmity (2 Corinthians 12). In fact, he besought the Lord Jesus to have it removed and the answer to his prayer was "no". Elsewhere Paul informs us that he left Miletus sick (2 Timothy 4:20). Furthermore, Luke was a "physician" who often accompanied Paul (Colossians 4:14; 2 Timothy 4:11).

It's probably because of all the foolish, false doctrine that's out there.

When I first became a Christian I watched a lot of the junk on TBN where it's common to hear things like, "healing is a promise" or "illness has no right to be in you"

Thank the Lord that he lead me away from that nonsense.

Way too many 'christians ' pay to have sickness removed by some creepy preacher.

Totally agree with your post @Faber

I thank God for the wisdom and research of the medical world.

I think it's also revealing that Paul (from Luke the physician?) gave Timothy good medical advice concerning his frequent sicknesses/ailments (1 Timothy 5:23). God often uses doctors and medicine to cure people if He so chooses.

Yes, God uses medicine, doctors and He heals divinely. If He decides to leave us with an illness, it is for a good (spiritual) reason.

Job 13:15 "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him."

Dan. 3:17, 18 "If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up." These boys weren't the least bit presumptuous.   :RpS_thumbup:

It's all a circus performance . And the actors are not in short demand. God can heal any physical sickness .But He does it through the talents of doctors that are trained to heal sicknesses and diseases . These fake " healers " have a nice racket going for them . Sadly there are many people who trust these thieves with their very lives and savings only to end up dead or carrying the same sickness they trusted to these pick pockets. Theirs will be the greatest damnation in Hell . Listen to what Jesus says, Matt.23:13-17
