John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Three Reasons Not to...

Recommended Posts

This thread is to identify a minimum of three reasons we would/should not do something.  Allow me to demonstrate:

Three reasons not to vote for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:

1) She is a feminist

2) She is a Socialist

3) She is an idiot

Really, any of these as a stand-alone would be good enough reason, but when you put them all together the case is very convincing.

Three reasons not to encourage learning from "life experience" rather than Wisdom:

1) The story of the Prodigal is not to encourage his behavior.

2) The story of the Prodigal is not to encourage living his life but rather living the Wisdom from the story.

3) The story of the Prodigal is not to encourage life experience (man) as it doesn't supersede Wisdom (God) and its application from faithful obedience as seldom do most people ever come to "their senses".

Three reasons not to miss Sunday Service:

#1: You'd miss out on fellowship with other believers,

#2: You'd miss out on hearing the Word proclaimed, and

#3: You'd miss out on having the Sacraments distributed to you.

Those three things, kept up for a long enough period of time, can kill somebody's faith.

Three reasons not to do "good" for yourself or to listen to false teachers such as Victoria Osteen:

1) Selflessness is illustrated by Jesus' examples and teachings.

2) Selflessness runs counter to human nature. Selfishness and Self centered worship is natural to the unregenerate.

3) Selflessness runs counter to finding support for our own selfish desires. And that includes listening to false teachers which justify our depravity.

I can't think of any reasons, let alone three to listen to either of these Word of Faith, super extremely wealthy, false teachers.

Anyone who supports the Osteen's is being mislead, and a spiritual sandbar is soon to shipwreck their faith.

Not too " bright " is how I view her . Asked by a conservative news outlet about the surge in job growth under president Trump , her reply was ; " The reason that employment is high is because Americans are having to work two jobs. "  How about  that level of intellect  ? However I would not be so quick to rule out her and her socialistic ,communist  intentions she wants desperately to bring to the presidency. Her voting block is large enough to give her a rather handsome lead over any conservative contenders . Remember," Everything for free "  sends a message to a large portion of the population that still believes that this country  owes them something. Couple that with the limited educational level of the ones she manages to bring to her side through lies and deceptions and you have the beginning of the end of our freedoms and democracies . Maybe she is viewed as not being a threat for now. But even the thought of this nation falling into socialism is enough to get all conservative Americans to the polls to vote out anything that resembles a democrat administration.    M

If these three things can kill someone's faith that easily ,that tells me that they never had genuine faith in the first place.

Now there's a turn of phrase.

Yes, if they had faith they wouldn't neglect fellowship, edification from the Word, and observance of the Lord's Supper.

When we think of the Psalms, most of us think solely of reading them. But we should also sing them, particularly in the gathering of the church. Indeed, for 3,000 years the Psalter has been the songbook of God’s people. Here are 10 reasons why it’s important to sing the Psalms in your church today. 1. The Bible Tells Us to That’s the strongest argument we’ve got. And it’s a good one! When we don’t take the Psalms seriously, our commitment to the Bible is called into question as well. 2. Psal

James Bishop   Introduction:   No doubt as Christians, and religious God believing people in general, we have encountered the many (which actually amounts to an insignificant few, although growing, if we tally the numbers over the years) “New” Atheists out there that take great pride in ridiculing and mocking those of faith, or those that proclaim belief in God. This is the subject of this writing so in this article I will briefly outline why I find these people, and their dogmatic ide

I didn’t do anything about it for years. Years while I was suffering from traumatic memories. Years when I knew it was wrong. Years when I knew that my silence was allowing sin to thrive. I experienced sexual abuse and assault as a child and as an adult. Spanning decades and leaving me confused and bro

Is it even necessary to pray? This question is sometimes asked today. Apparently, it was also popular over 500 years ago.   In his famous book Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin dedicates extensive time on prayer, and gives plenty of reasons why you and I should pray.   “But someone will say,” Calvin writes, “does God not know even without being reminded, both in what respect we are troubled, and what is expedient for us, so that it seems in a sense that it may be superflous
