John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • John 3:16 and Man’s Ability to Choose God

by R.C. Sproul   It is ironic that in the same chapter, indeed in the same context, in which our Lord teaches the utter necessity of rebirth to even see the kingdom, let alone choose it, non-Reformed views find one of their main proof texts to argue that fallen man retains a small island of ability to choose Christ. It is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”   What does this

John 6:65-66 (65) And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.” (66) As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.    Verse 65 corresponds to what the Lord Jesus said earlier in John 6:44.   In verse 66 those who rejected what Christ said in verse 65 withdrew from him. His words from verse 65 caused them to disassociate from Him.   I do w

    • Jesus’ Preexistence in the Gospel of John

by Robert Reymond   Did Jesus claim for himself pre-existence, and if so, in what sense? In the ontological (essential) or in the ideal (‘foreknown’) sense? For one who takes Jesus’ words at face value and does not explain them away, it is evident that Jesus affirmed of himself as ‘the Son,’ not just an ideational pre-existence, but a pre-existence of an eternal ontological kind: ‘Glorify me, Father,’ he prayed, ‘with yourself, with the glory which I had with you before the world was’ (17

By Whitney Tipton - Former CIA Director John Brennan said Monday morning that he was “relieved” by the Attorney General’s summary of the Mueller report, admitting the findings presented less than he anticipated in terms of criminal activity. “Well, I don’t know if I received bad information but I suspected there was more than there actually was. I am relieved that it’s been determined there was not a criminal conspiracy with the Russian government over our election. I think that’s good new
