John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

It had never crossed Anthony Ray Hinton's mind either, who as a young 29-year-old man had only known living life as a sheltered and marginalized black man, having grown up in the sunbelt of a little small Alabama town outside of Montgomery. Hinton served 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. He only saw the sun for an hour a day and never knew or even at times believed that he would see the sun as a free man again. • Reactions To Hell

They didn't inform me that Jesus Christ was returning some day to rule the world, so it wasn't till I was around 24 years old when a Protestant man asked me if I was ready for the Lord coming back.   Well; at first the man's question puzzled me because i wasn't aware of that aspect of the Earth's future. But then right away I became alarmed because I instinctively knew that if I had to f

    • I Feel Invisible After My Wife’s Death

Last month I lost my wife to a seven-and-a-half year battle with cancer. I’m a 38-year-old pastor and a dad to three incredible boys who are 12, 10, and 7. I’m learning that grief is an unpredictable, lurking beast that strikes when you’re least expecting it, and in the most unusual places—Disney World, the bathroom at Target, Starbucks. No place is safe from an attack. I’m also discovering I’m a verbal processor. I think best when talking or with a literal pen in hand, even more so as I’ve bee
