John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

  • The Philippines and the Roman Catholic Church

A man was nailed to a cross with up to 10 more to follow as barefoot men beat themselves with flails on Good Friday, in a blood-soaked display of religious fervor in the Philippines. Frowned upon by the Church, the ritual crucifixions and self-flagellation in the north of the country are extreme affirmations of faith performed every Easter in Asia’s Catholic outpost. Wilfredo Salvador stared at the sky and appeared to mumble a prayer after the slight 62-year-old with wild grey hair and

    The Carnal Christian

Upon encountering the title of this article one’s first thought might seem negative about it, but with all who become “born again” there is a period of growth that involves learning in the Word of God about the “old man,” which is the sin nature first seen in Adam and Eve, then in the entirety of their progeny—mankind (Rom 5:12-19). Upon rebirth the soul becomes “spiritually minded,” due to the imparting of the Spirit of God and the new nature (new man); and the old man continues to become more

If people willingly deny Jesus, could they ever be saved?

I have a few friends who are atheists, and are indifferent to the Gospel. They know it, they were once theists in some cases, but they reject the idea of Christianity, as a whole concept. They sometimes play with the idea that ''a god'' exists, but not a personal God, and Jesus is ''just another prophet,'' in their eyes. If they live relatively decent lives, being kind to others, etc...can they be saved? Or asking it another way, will all people who willingly reject Jesus, spend eternity in hell

John 3:16 and Man’s Ability to Choose God

by R.C. Sproul   It is ironic that in the same chapter, indeed in the same context, in which our Lord teaches the utter necessity of rebirth to even see the kingdom, let alone choose it, non-Reformed views find one of their main proof texts to argue that fallen man retains a small island of ability to choose Christ. It is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”   What does this

    Is smoking/chewing tobacco a sin?

My second question is perhaps more complicated: Is it (also) a (greater?) sin to smoke whereby others can breathe it (secondhand smoke)?

Proofs that sinning believers will not inherit or enter heaven

The Kingdom of heaven is headed by Jesus Christ for the purpose of re-establishing the Kingdom of God over this rebellious part of God’s realm. It is a dispensational term referring to Messiah’s Kingdom on earth. The parables of the Kingdom apply to this age. At the end of this age, Christ will come and set up a literal earthly Kingdom forever. (from the famous “Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible”)   The parables of the hidden treasure (Matt 13:44) and the pearl of great price (Matt 13:
