John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

  • Please help convince me to not convert to Catholicism...

Hi, my name is James. I hope this is an appropriate use of the forum and not in violation of any etiquette or rules. If not, I apologize. I'm posting to a few different forums in the hope/prayer that people will share with others and help me in my journey as I navigate some questions I have about Protestantism v. Catholicism. I'm hoping to pursue that journey here:   https://inlimbosite.wordpress.com/   Grace and Peace, James

Proofs that sinning believers will not inherit or enter heaven

The Kingdom of heaven is headed by Jesus Christ for the purpose of re-establishing the Kingdom of God over this rebellious part of God’s realm. It is a dispensational term referring to Messiah’s Kingdom on earth. The parables of the Kingdom apply to this age. At the end of this age, Christ will come and set up a literal earthly Kingdom forever. (from the famous “Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible”)   The parables of the hidden treasure (Matt 13:44) and the pearl of great price (Matt 13:

How well do you know the Bible?

Last year, I decided to start reading the Bible again, but with a different spirit. I'm starting from the OT and reading it as if I were reading a novel, beginning to the end. I've always read the Bible, in disarray it seems, but starting with the OT, I'm reading things that I don't remember ever reading in the past.   So, I'm growing in my Bible knowledge, and how to better understand it. I also have a Bible with footnotes that help to read it as it was intended.    I hope t

    Guess that Idiom (KJV)

I am posting this just for fun.  Most of us grew up using (and still do) the KJV.  When quoting a passage out loud from memory almost always, in my case, it is from the KJV.   I am going to cite a verse from the KJV.  In that verse is an idiom I will put in bold.  Without any other source other than the KJV itself (do not look at any modern translation that would be cheating) given the meaning of the idiom.  You may check the context of the verse in the KJV.   "And if any man

    When the church went astray

When, according to most Protestants, did the church go off the rails? presumably they think that it was on the right track through the time of Paul and the apostles. Do they accept the first 7 church councils  as being authoritative? obviously they don’t accept Trent. did the church go astray when the bishop of Rome was accepted as the boss of the others  -- and when was that?

The sin of Saul or the sin of Jonathan (1 Samuel 14)?

Did Saul sin in making an unnecessary oath (1 Samuel 14:24), or did Jonathan sin in defying it and publicly challenging his father's command (1 Samuel 14:29)?
